Universal Technology Corp. in Dayton, OH received a $24.5 million contract under the short-term aerospace research and development program (STAR-DP) to provide research support to the US Air Force Research Lab’s Air Vehicles Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH.
The Air Vehicles Directorate conducts research and development in the areas of aeronautical science, vehicle control technologies and structures for all atmospheric and transatmospheric vehicles.
Universal Technology Corp. will provide support in 4 technology areas: aeronautical sciences, structural sciences, control sciences and vehicle integration. Under the STAR-DP, the contractor is expected to provide short turnarounds on tasks of less than 21 calendar days.
The company will be expected to provide research and development support to examine the technical challenges for air vehicle concepts, such as:
- high speed vehicles for survivable ISR and long-range strike;
- hypersonic vehicles for space access and rapid global strike;
- miniature air vehicles for close-in sensing in a multi-layer sensing environment.
Associated studies and analyses would include aerodynamic, stability and control, weight estimates, structural layout, propulsion integration, and performance analyses for technology assessment and multi-disciplinary design and analysis activities. Research and development may also be required to address air vehicle sustainment and condition-based-maintenance & structural integrity issues, flow control devices, store separation at all speed regimes, and cooperative/ intelligent control for all these vehicle applications.
The Universal Technology Corp. contract is managed by the AFRL/PKVC at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH (FA8650-10-D-3037).
