Hundreds of handheld pagers exploded near simultaneously across Lebanon and in parts of Syria on Tuesday, Lebanon’s health minister says eight were killed and some 2,800 were wounded, including 200 seriously. Hezbollah has said that two members are among the dead. A young girl, the daughter of a Hezbollah member, was also reported killed after a pager exploded in her parents’ home. Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah have been engaged in cross-border warfare in parallel with the Gaza war which erupted last October, the worst such escalation in years. The pagers that detonated were the latest model brought in by Hezbollah in recent months, three security sources said. No group has claimed responsibility for the explosions, but suspicion immediately fell on Israel’s intelligence services.
