The Afghan National Army and Police will be getting handheld explosives detection devices thanks to the U.S. Army, which has purchased $6.8 million worth of the Fido XTis made by ICx Technologies. As part of the contract, ICx will also provide in-country training and support services. The company began shipping units at the end of June.
Insurgents have been stepping up their use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Afghanistan. On July 6/09, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) reported that 6 service members were killed in IED explosions. Their nationalities were not released, but the LA Timesreported that they were U.S. service members. And on June 22/09, the ISAF said that 6 Afghan civilians were killed and 26 wounded when two IEDs exploded in Khost city in eastern Afghanistan.
CACI International in Arlington, VA won 2 separate contracts worth up to $104 million to supply IT support to the U.S. Navy and intelligence database support to the U.S. Army.
For the Navy, CACI won a contract worth up to $70 million to enhance, maintain and support the Military Sealift Command’s IT systems used for maintenance and supply processes. The base value of the indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract with fixed-priced task orders is $8.7 million. The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $70 million. At the time of award, $1 million will be obligated.

Clark Construction Group in Tampa, FL won a $61 million form-fixed-contract to build a 4-story, 257,000-square-foot building at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. The facility will utilize pile and reinforced concrete foundations, steel frame with insulated pre-cast concrete panels, metal decking, standing seam metal roof, raised access flooring throughout, laminated force protection glass, elevators, underground utilities, parking, landscaping, exterior walkways, paving, large entrance plaza, security fencing, backup generator power, uninterruptible power supply system, telecommunication wiring infrastructure, and audio visual infrastructure.
MacDill Air Force Base is home to the 6th Air Mobility Wing as well as 53 mission partners, including U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command. The presence of these two unified commands and other mission partners creates a unique multi-service community at MacDill, with all branches of service represented.
Clark will perform the work at MacDill with an estimated completion date of June 24/13. Bids were solicited using FedBizOpps with 16 received by the Corps of Engineers-Mobile Regional Contracting Center in Mobile, AL (W91278-09-C-0031).
Kiewit Building Group in Honolulu, HI won a $24.4 million firm-fixed-price contract for the construction of a fitness center at the Naval Station Pearl Harbor. A new paved parking area with new access driveways, landscaping, and the demolition of 4 existing building structures are also included in this project.
Kiewit will performed the work in Oahu, HI and expects to complete the facility by November 2011. This contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online website, with 6 proposals received by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Pacific in Pearl Harbor (N62742-09-C-1304).
