Iraqi, Afghan Operations Prompt US Army Order for More AH-64D Apache Ammunition

Alliant Techsystems (ATK) in Minneapolis, MN received an $86 million base-with-option contract to provide lightweight (LW) 30mm M789 High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) tactical ammunition for the AH-64D Apache attack helicopter. The U.S. Army Contracting Command’s Rock Island Contracting Center in Rock Island, IL manages the contract. Alliant expects to begin production in December 2009 at the company’s facilities in Elk River, MN; Radford, VA; and Rocket Center, WV.

The AH-64D Apache attack helicopter has been going through Block III improvements that are incorporating 25 technology insertions as part of the Army’s future force plan. “Apache Block III Program: The Once and Future Attack Helicopter” has more on the Block III improvements.

In a September 2008 letter justifying the use of ATK as the sole supplier of LW30mm M789 HEDP ammunition, the US Department of the Army said that the depletion of stocks from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan prompted the order. There are several reasons that this weapon has been so popular…

Up to $500M to 8 Firms for Military Construction in Southwest US

The US Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest in San Diego, CA awarded 8 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/ indefinite quantity multiple award construction contracts for heavy horizontal and civil engineering construction at various locations within the NAVFAC Southwest area of responsibility (AOR). The firms will provide design, construction, supervision, equipment, materials, labor, and all means necessary to build usable facilities. The total amount for all 8 contracts is not to exceed $500 million.

The firms will perform the construction work in the Southwest AOR, including but not limited to California (80%), Arizona (12%), Nevada (5%), New Mexico (1%), Utah (1%), and Colorado (1%), and expect to complete the work by July 2014. And the winners are…

CVN 70’s Carl Vinson Checks in for Maintenance 1 Month after Return to Service

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson [CVN 70] is returning to Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA this month for $50 million worth of maintenance work following completion of its refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) and return to service in July.

Northrop Grumman expects to complete the maintenance work by December 2009. The work is being performed under a modification to a previously awarded contract (N62793-03-G-0001). Contract funds of $30.7 million will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair in Newport News, VA manages the contract.

Mid Eastern Builders to Build Fuel Storage Tanks at USN’s Craney Island Terminal

Mid Eastern Builders in Chesapeake, VA won a $36.4 million firm-fixed-price contract for replacement of fuel storage tanks at Craney Island Fuel Terminal in Portsmouth, VA. Mid Eastern Builders will demolition the 19 aged bulk storage tanks and build 6 new tanks.

The company expects to complete the work by August 2012. The contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online website, with 6 proposals received by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, VA (N40085-09-C-5037). According to Globalsecurity.org, Craney Island Fuel Terminal is the US Navy’s largest fuel facility in the United States…
