Indonesia Orders Up More Maritime Patrol Aircraft

Indonesia has more coastline to cover than almost any country in the world (2nd only to Canada), and its archipelago straddles one of the world’s most important shipping chokepoints. On Dec 11/09, its defense ministry signed an $80 million contract with state-owned Dirgantara for 3 CN-235-220 MPA maritime patrol aircraft. The 3 planes are half of the 6 provided for in the Indonesian Navy’s 2010-2014 Strategic Plan, as part of its Minimum Essential Force.

The CN-235 light air transport is a successful collaboration between EADS-CASA of Spain and Indonesia’s Dirgantara (formerly IPTN).

US Army Orders 3,205 TRX Trainers to Keep Deployed Troops Fit

The US Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Command purchased 3,205 TRX Suspension Trainer kits from Fitness Anywhere in San Francisco, CA to help deployed troops keep fit in any combat environment.

Developed by a group of US Navy SEALs, the TRX Suspension Trainer provides workouts for US troops wherever they can find a beam, doorway, or tank to anchor the resistance-training device.

MWR is sending 205 of the combat-boot-sized TRX Trainers to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the recreation kits for deployed troops.

University of Dayton Gets $49.5M from USAF for Jet Fuel Research

University of Dayton Research Institute in Dayton, OH received a $49.5 million contract to conduct jet fuel research under the Fuels and Combustion Technologies for Aerospace Propulsion program.

The institute will investigate and evaluate advanced fuels and fuel technologies, fuel systems component development, advance combustor and augmenter designs, advanced fuel properties measurement, fuel system component development and safety, combustion emissions and their integration into advanced aerospace applications.

The institute received its 1st USAF contract for the fuel research program in 2003…
