Donald Trump has vowed to construct a ‘Golden Dome’ – similar to Israel’s ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense – as he build :”the most powerful military of the future”. The first step, he told a joint sitting of the United States Congress is to fund a “state-of-the-art missile shield to protect our homeland”. The initiative aims to shield US from a rapidly evolving array of aerial threats, including a range of ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles. Trump’s latest announcement to the Congress is being seen as the official renaming of the US’ flagship security initiative, initially launched as the “Iron Dome for America”.

Researchers at the Purdue Applied Research Institute (PARI) are developing 3D-printed dark ceramics for hypersonic missiles and aircraft. These materials are ideal for withstanding extreme conditions due to their durability and resistance to degradation. Using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printers, the team can create complex shapes with high precision, allowing for intricate designs with smooth surfaces. This technology is crucial for producing components like sharp cones and hemispheres, which are essential for hypersonic vehicle construction. The 3D-printed dark ceramics can withstand extremely high temperatures and intense pressures, making them a significant advancement in hypersonic technology. This breakthrough could revolutionize the development of next-generation aerospace and defense systems.

The US Air Force has made history by designating its Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program prototypes as fighter drones. The prototypes, developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and Anduril, are designated the YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A, respectively. This marks the first time the Air Force has given fighter designations to unmanned aircraft. The “Y” in the designation indicates that these are prototypes, which will be dropped once the aircraft enter production. The “F” signifies a fighter, and “Q” denotes an unmanned aircraft. These drones are part of a new era in aerial warfare, designed to enhance combat capabilities by operating alongside crewed fighter jets. The prototypes are expected to be ready for their first flights in the summer of 2025.

The US State Department has unfrozen $95 million in military aid to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), granting a waiver to a halt on military aid that occurred shortly after the Trump administration arrived in January. “The Department approved an exception to expend the $95 million of Foreign Military Financing recently reprogrammed to Lebanon. We are working with our DoD colleagues to move forward with the implementation of these funds,” a State Department Spokesperson told Breaking Defense Tuesday.

The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded a contract to Granzow to supply up to 160 breathing air compressors for the armed forces’ diving operations. These compressors collect and purify large volumes of ambient air for use in respiratory devices such as scuba tanks. Under the agreement, Granzow will distribute Bauer air compressor kits in small, medium, and large variations. The company, based in Enköping, will provide these “well-proven” systems to support the Swedish military’s diving needs.

Singapore is enhancing its military capabilities with plans to procure new submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, and other defense assets. Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen announced these plans during the Committee of Supply 2025 session, citing the need for preparedness in “turbulent times”. The country will acquire additional submarines and introduce new maritime patrol aircraft. A new infantry fighting vehicle with counter-drone capabilities is also part of the plans. Singapore’s defense expenditure for 2025 is projected at approximately 23.4 billion Singaporean dollars ($17.4 billion), a 12.4 percent increase from 2024. Minister Ng highlighted the importance of these investments, referencing the vulnerability of smaller states as seen in the Ukraine conflict. These procurements aim to maintain Singapore’s qualitative edge through technological innovation and strategic partnerships.
