A Brazilian defense organization has introduced an exploding drone prototype dubbed Anshar. Its unveiling comes as the weapons class gains prominence amid Russia’s war in Ukraine. Also known as loitering munitions, they typically are able to remain in flight until a remote user issues the order to crash into a target.

Northrop Grumman won a modification, which provides for sustaining engineering and logistics support services for the Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) program, including engineering changes, contractor logistics support, depot lifecycle support, software support activity support, diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages support, technical refresh, studies and analyses, services for the retrofit of six fielded Gallium Arsenide G/ATOR Low Rate Initial Production systems with Gallium Nitride technology, operational spares buys, software development for current and future radar systems, and the 5G America’s Mid-band Initiative Spectrum accommodation. Work locations will be determined by individual task orders and is expected to be complete by September 28, 2025.

Middle East & Africa

General Dynamics Land Systems won a $16 million modification for contractor logistics support services for the M1A1SA/M88. Work will be performed at Camp Taji, Iraq, with an estimated completion date of December 13, 2023. Fiscal 2022 Iraq Train and Equip funds in the amount of $15,992,597 were obligated at the time of the award.

Europe

The Belgian defense ministry has announced that it will officially join the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS) next-generation fighter program by June 2025. The announcement comes after Brussels signified its intention earlier this year to join the FCAS project, but only as an observer nation.

The Netherlands has signified its intention to join a European association for joint production and acquisition of military weapons and equipment. Known by its French acronym OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement), the group facilitates cooperative defense programs and delivers modern capabilities to nations to deter sophisticated threats.

Asia-Pacific

India has carried out another test fire of its extended-range (ER) BrahMos PJ-10 supersonic cruise missile from a Kolkata/Visakhapatnam (Project 15A/15B)-class guided destroyer, the country’s Ministry of Defense said. The missile was fired from the programme’s sixth hull, which will be in service as INS Imphal once it is commissioned. It was fired as part of the vessel’s pre-commissioning trials, the ministry added.
