HII Ingalls Shipbuilding has christened the US Navy’s third America-class amphibious assault ship in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The USS Bougainville (LHA 8) is a multi-functional vessel that can deploy in obstructed conditions. Its operational flexibility in various environments will further support the service’s expeditionary strike groups, amphibious-ready groups. and amphibious task forces.

Poland’s outgoing National Defense Minister Mariusz B?aszczak has signed what is likely the last major weapon acquisition contract inked before the nation’s forthcoming change in government, ordering some 152 self-propelled howitzers from South Korea’s Hanwha Defense. Under the deal, Poland’s Army will receive six K9A1 and 146 K9PL howitzers in the years 2025 to 2027. The contract has a net value of some $2.6 billion, the Polish Armed Forces said in a statement.
The Latvian government has signed a contract worth roughly $650 milliion with Germany’s Diehl Defence for the company’s IRIS-T medium-range air defense system, the manufacturer announced on Monday. The deal, signed on Nov. 30, is the Baltic country’s “biggest defense investment since its independence more than 30 years ago,” Diehl said in a statement. It follows a framework agreement the company previously signed with Latvia and Estonia in September.
The South Korean Navy conducted its first domestic maritime missile live-fire test in the East Sea, or Sea of Japan, on Friday. An aerial target was struck by an SM-2 ship-to-air missile being tracked from the Samcheok Marine Research center on Gangwon province’s eastern coast. The Raytheon missile can pursue aircraft and anti-ship missiles up to 167 kilometers away. Seoul bought the missiles in 2021 from the US for $314 million.
