General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has announced two major upgrades to its MQ-9A Reaper drones for cyber and anti-aircraft missile threats. The company disclosed last week that it had tapped the services of US cybersecurity startup Shift5 to integrate its onboard cyber anomaly detection and predictive maintenance solutions into the remotely piloted aircraft. These capabilities will help defeat malicious code that could disable the drone or steal valuable intelligence data, ensuring cyber survivability and enhanced mission readiness.

The US Army has awarded Lockheed Martin a $451-million contract to upgrade its M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). Lockheed’s MLRS overhaul will include new engines, improved armor cabs, and the Common Fire Control System, which is compatible with current and future MLRS munitions. The upgrade will be performed for both domestic and international launchers. “The modernization effort will add additional capability to the combat-proven launcher and ensure the M270-series launcher remains highly effective, reliable and interoperable with NATO forces for decades to come,” Lockheed Martin Precision Fires VP Jay Price said.

According to Defense News, the Israel Aerospace Industries workers’ union has announced a labor dispute and is threatening to disrupt the company’s supply to its customers. The dispute, announced Monday, follows the Israeli Finance Ministry’s demand that it regulate so-called salary anomalies found within the state-owned defense company. The government is seeking the return of hundreds of millions of shekels that IAI employees received over multiple years without governmental approval, contrary to what is customary in state-owned firms.

Estonia is “seriously” considering deploying troops to Ukraine to take on non-direct combat roles, according to Tallinn’s national security advisor Madis Roll. The move would aim to free up more Ukrainian soldiers so they can support combat operations on the front. “Discussions are ongoing,” Roll told Breaking Defense. “We should be looking at all the possibilities. We shouldn’t have our minds restricted as to what we can do.”

South Korea has announced it is reviewing Indonesia’s proposal to reduce its financial contribution to their joint KF-21 Boramae jet fighter program. The country’s defense acquisition agency stated the cut may be possible under the condition of providing fewer technology transfers to Jakarta, since the project’s estimated cost is about $366 million cheaper than previously expected.

Work will be performed at Nashua, New Hampshire, and is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is the contracting activity.

According to Defense News, the United Arab Emirates seeks closer defense ties with the United States and China alike, the prospects of exporting the F-35 fighter to Abu Dhabi anytime soon may be getting slimmer. On April 23, the chief of joint operations for the UAE Armed Forces met with the commander of the Chinese Air Force in Beijing to discuss options for strengthening collaboration between their services. The meeting served as the Gulf nation’s most recent overture to China, signaling a particular interest in warplane cooperation.
Northrop Grumman won a $7 billion deal for B-2 modernization and sustainment. This contract provides for B-2 enhancements, sustainment, logistics elements including sustaining engineering, software maintenance, and support equipment. Also included is programmed depot maintenance of the fleet and other interim contractor support. Work will be performed at Palmdale, California; with performance at other locations, namely Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri; Tinker AFB, Oklahoma; Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio; Edwards AFB, California; and Hill AFB, Utah, and is expected to be completed by May 3, 2029. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, B-2 Division Contracting, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, is the contracting activity.

The US Army has revealed a new variant of the Bradley tracked armored fighting vehicle in Saco, Maine. The M2A4E1 is touted as the vehicle’s “most modern and survivable version.” It is integrated with an Iron Fist active protection system to detect and intercept incoming missiles and rockets using radar and infrared trackers and explosive projectiles. The newest Bradley is also equipped with an improved High-Definition Forward-Looking Infrared Gunner’s Sight and an Environmental Control Unit to prevent heat stress.
