The L-band, solid-state, 3-D AN/FPS-117 remains a very popular air surveillance radar around the globe, and can support both military and civilian functions. They’re designed for relatively good range and minimal maintenance, even in extremely harsh environments like northern Alaska and Greenland.

Jan 30/14: An $8.5 million firm-fixed-price contract modification, exercising unpriced options for 13 Field Maintenance Equipment Kits to provide “spare single point failure items” in support of AN/FPS-117 radar site modernizations in Canada, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Hill AFB, UT.
All funds are committed immediately, using FY 2012 and FY 2014 procurement budgets. Work will be performed at Liverpool, NY, with the kits being delivered to the various locations by July 30/15. The USAF Life Cycle Management Center/PZZKA at Hill AFB, UT manages this contract (FA8217-11-C-0005, PO 0017).
