Americas Boeing has been awarded a $271-million deal to produce six “remanufactured” MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters for the US Army. Boeing said the updates to the chopper answer the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command’s need for battle-ready heavy-lift helicopters capable of adapting to increasingly complex missions. The contract brings the total number of Block II orders for the army to 42. Work for the Chinooks is expected to be completed by May 2027. A Boeing-led consortium has demonstrated the US Missile Defense Agency’s Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system against an intermediate-range ballistic missile in space. GMD neutralizes high-altitude threats such as intercontinental ballistic missiles carrying conventional, nuclear, chemical, or biological warheads. The team tested the GMD’s Capability Increment 6B, a configuration enabling “more time, space, and flexibility” to intercept threats against a Northrop Grumman-made target missile. BAE Systems has unveiled the members of its industry team pitching for a British Army 155mm artillery requirement ahead of the expected launch of the competition early next year. Babcock and Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) are joining a BAE-led team offering the Archer 8×8 wheeled artillery system for the Ministry of Defense’s Mobile Fires Platform program, the companies announced December 11.

The Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana: AMI) has flown its first Block 5 version of the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI) MQ-9A Reaper unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The manufacturer announced the milestone on 5 December, saying the first flight of the remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) took place some weeks earlier on November 9.

Asia-Pacific

The $874.2 billion fiscal 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, finalized last week, would fully authorize the trilateral AUKUS agreement with Australia and Britain and codify into law a new nuclear mission for Virginia-class submarines.It would also require a comprehensive Defense Department training program for Taiwanese troops and set up a special inspector general for Ukraine aid.
