Americas Design West won a $21 million modification to exercise options to procure launch sequencers and associated kitted material in support of the MK 41 Vertical Launching System. This modification combines purchases for the Navy; and the governments of Finland, Australia, Germany, Norway, Canada, and the Republic of Korea under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Work will be performed in Tustin, California, and is expected to be completed by November 2024. Fiscal 2023 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $9,783,004; FMS (Finland) funds in the amount of $2,780,448; FMS (Australia) funds in the amount of $2,095,012 (10%); FMS (Germany) funds in the amount of $2,085,336; FMS (Norway) funds in the amount of $1,742,618; FMS (Canada) funds in the amount of $1,451,492; and FMS (Republic of Korea) funds in the amount of $1,390,224, will be obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation has been in turmoil, with armed gangs taking over parts of the country and unleashing brutal violence, and the economy and public health system also in tatters.

Middle East and Africa

Aeronautics Ltd., an Israeli designer, developer, and manufacturer of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for the global defense and HLS markets, announced it has secured several contracts, for a total sum of $60 million, to supply advanced ground control stations (GCS) for its Orbiter UAV systems. The contracts also include essential maintenance. In the framework of one of the new contracts, Aeronautics will provide two types of ground control stations to complement the Orbiter UAS operations. The first is the portable ground control station (PGCS), which features flight- and mission-operation software, video-tracker software, and payload sensor data. According to the company, the PGCS provides flexibility and mobility for tactical deployments and caters to dynamic mission requirements in various environments.

In a historic ceremony at the French Air Force Base Mont-de-Marsan on October 2, 2023, the Republic of Croatia officially received the first of 12 Rafale multirole combat aircraft from the French Republic. The event marked a significant milestone in Croatia’s efforts to modernize its air force and enhance its defense capabilities. The handover ceremony was attended by Croatia’s Defense Minister, Mario Banoži?, alongside other dignitaries, including Zvonimir Frka-Peteši?, Head of the Office of the Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Croatian War Veterans, Tom Medved. A delegation from the Croatian Armed Forces, led by Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces General Staff, Admiral Robert Hranj, was also present.

Asia-Pacific

According to Jane’s, the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) has taken delivery of another ex-Singapore Fearless-class patrol vessel. The vessel, which will be in service as KDB Al-Faruq with pennant number 99, was handed over to the service in a ceremony at RSS Singapura – Changi Naval Base in Singapore on October 2.

Chinese defense companies are tapping into Serbia’s market potential, striving to further expand their activities within the country and the wider Balkan region, manufacturers say. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace referred to Serbia as China’s “open-door” to the Balkan region in a 2019 report. Four years later, their relationship is strengthening, as demonstrated at a Serbian government-sponsored Partner 23 defense exhibition held in Belgrade this week.
