Americas The US Army is developing a new off-road, high-speed unmanned ground vehicle prototype for urban reconnaissance and natural disaster relief missions. Called the “Deep Orange 14,” the robotic vehicle will be produced in collaboration with South Carolina-based research institution, Clemson University. According to the university, the prototype will be able to navigate through unknown and challenging terrain to support missions in areas other military vehicles cannot reach. The US Air Force has awarded JetZero a $235-million contract to produce a blended-wing body (BWB) full-scale prototype aircraft. The BWB platform features an architecture that combines the body directly with its high-aspect-ratio wing to increase lift and decrease aerodynamic drag by 30 percent. Middle East and Africa Arizona-based MD Helicopters has received a helicopter contract for a country in the Middle East. MD said the 12 helicopters will be deployed for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. The agreement is for six Cayuse Warrior Plus Attack/Scout light helicopters armed with precision weapons and six 530F multi-purpose aircraft equipped with glass cockpit upgrades. Sweden has extended its offer of the Saab JAS-39 “Gripen” multi-role fighter aircraft to the Philippines for the country’s Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) project. The announcement was made during a meeting between Sweden’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Annika Thunborg, and Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. at the DND headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on August 14, 2023. The JAS-39 Gripen C/D+ fighter aircraft stands as one of the top contenders for the PAF multirole fighter acquisition project, alongside the US Lockheed Martin F-16V Block 50/52 Variant. The MRF project’s approval was secured under the administration of former president Rodrigo R. Duterte, reflecting the nation’s strategic focus on enhancing its defense capabilities.

Poland’s National Armed Forces Day took on added significance this year as Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) proudly showcased its FA-50GF light fighter aircraft. The event marked the debut of the first two FA-50GF jets delivered to the Polish Air Force, signifying a significant step in Poland’s military modernization efforts. The impressive flights over Warsaw on Aug. 15 underscored the FA-50GF’s adaptability and prowess, capturing the attention of spectators and officials alike. The FA-50GF jets, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), soared above Warsaw’s skies in formation with Poland’s Mig-29s.

BAE Systems Plc is in talks about a possible acquisition of Ball Corp.’s aerospace division, people with knowledge of the matter said, in what would be the year’s largest acquisition by a UK corporate. The London-listed defense giant is in discussions with the US packaging group about the terms of a takeover of the unit, which manufactures instruments and sensors for everything from space travel to weather forecasting, according to the people. A deal could value Ball’s aerospace operations at more than $5 billion and be reached as early as this week, one of the people said.

Asia-Pacific

A Taiwanese Air Force official has revealed that a US-supplied MIM-104F Patriot PAC-3 missile malfunctioned during a recent live-fire drill. Air Force Chief of Staff General Tsao Chin-Ping confirmed  that the surface-to-air weapon exploded before hitting its target. This is reportedly the first time a Patriot missile has prematurely exploded in the island nation.
