The United States Department of the Navy is seeking diver and unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) detection and tracking technologies. The department wants the technologies to augment seabed and port security, supporting detection, tracking, and fire control, a department solicitation notice stated. The department’s desired mission packages — including subsystems, equipment, and software — fall into two categories: mission manager and mission module.

Boeing won a $15.5 million delivery order for the repair of the E6B aircraft. This was a sole-source acquisition using justification 10 US Code 2304 (c)(1), as stated in Federal Acquisition Regulation 6.302-1. This is an approximately three-month contract with no option periods. The performance completion date is December 31, 2023.

Middle East and Africa

The United Arab Emirates Sunday denied a report claiming weapons were found in its aid shipments to refugees of the Sudan war, arguing it “does not take sides” in the conflict. Fighting since April 15 between the forces of rival Sudanese generals vying for power has killed at least 3,900 people, according to conservative estimates by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.

Spanish shipbuilder Navantia held a keel-laying ceremony for the first F-110-class frigate for the Spanish Navy in Ferrol, Spain, on August 9. The construction of this vessel, the first of a series of five next-generation frigates destined for the Navy, began in April 2022. This milestone event was attended by the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Antonio Piñeiro, accompanied by Navantia’s president, Ricardo Domínguez, and the director of the Frigates and Intervention Ships business, Eduardo Dobarro.

Asia-Pacific

Taiwan’s Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology is at the forefront of developing the next generation of air-to-air missiles. Named the Tien Chien V, this cutting-edge missile system promises to redefine Taiwan’s combat capabilities by combining enhanced range, advanced technologies, and improved anti-jamming features. The Tien Chien V missile, with a projected range of 160km, is poised to rival the renowned US-made AIM-120C-8. A senior defense official, speaking anonymously, revealed that this ambitious project is a progression from the well-established Tien Chien II medium-range air-to-air missile. Drawing upon the foundation of its predecessor, the Tien Chien V is expected to set new benchmarks in aerial engagement and combat effectiveness.

The Indian Army has announced the induction of six units of a mountain variant of the Swathi Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) to enhance battlefield surveillance. The WLR, also known as the Swathi Mark II, was delivered to the Indian Army by state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in early August.
