M916 Freightliner L.L.C. in Portland, OR received a delivery order amount of $165.9 million as part of a $725.3 million firm-fixed-price contract for M916A3 Light Equipment Transporters. The M916 is part of the M915 family of tractor-trailers, and are almost carbon copies of commercial tractor-trailer trucks; many of them are being up-armored with Crew Protection Kits for service in combat zones. Those kits provide substantially less protection than Ceradyne’s new BULL system, but they are an improvement over unarmored options for the “loggies” that travel dangerous roads to bring the front line troops the supplies they need every day. Work will be performed in Portland, OR, and is expected to be complete by Oct. 17, 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Bids were solicited via the World Wide Web on April 21, 2000, and 2 bids were received by the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command in Warren, MI (DAAE07-00-D-S022).
