HMMWV, IEDed(click to view full) The USA’s High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) remains the main source of mobility for US land forces. Despite vastly accelerated wear cause by the extra weight of up-armoring the vehicles, and the steady movement of US allies to more survivable options designed for the non-linear battlefield, the size of the existing fleet and continued large procurements mean that the “Humvee” (or “Hummer”) is expected to remain in that leading role for some time to come. A large associated manufacturing base in crucial political states doesn’t hurt, either. September 2006 HMMWV Contracts M1114 On Patrol in Iraq The M1114 is the standard up-armored Hummer now in use in Iraq et. al. Defense Update explains its improved protection. There is also an M1116 version for the USAF, which is very similar but has a better top turret to protect the gunner and contains some different electronics and gear. Recently, a pair of new Hummers have been introduced. M1151s are Enhanced Armament Carriers, while M1152s are Enhanced Troop/ Cargo/ Shelter Carriers and M1152P1s are ambulances.
